Who Can Live In The Other Side Village?
Homelessness is a multifaceted problem that requires a variety of solutions. Our goal is to provide a solution — specifically, for those who are chronically homeless and who often have one or more serious disabilities.
Who are the “chronically homeless?”
The Village has worked with homeless advocates to define chronic homelessness as any person with a disability who has been living in a place not meant for human habitation for the last 12 months continuously or on multiple occasions that cumulatively total at least 12 months. We expect many to have at least one disabling condition.
Wraparound Resident Services
At The Other Side Village, we are providing more than just adequate housing. We are developing a community with revolutionary services and attention to an individual’s relational needs at a fraction of the cost of traditional housing initiatives. The emphasis at The Other Side Village is on dignity, love, respect, abundance, and acceptance.
Services for our residents will include:
- Access to medical and mental healthcare, along with substance abuse support
- Caseworkers and a neighborhood support network
- A food pantry and community vegetable gardens
- A gated community with security
- Opportunities for paid jobs within the community
Social Enterprises and Fiscal Sustainability
Once we launch and are in operation, we plan on reaching self-sufficiency to cover our operational expenses through the revenues generated from our social enterprises so we do not have to be reliant upon ongoing donations or operational funds for donations.
All enterprises at The Village will be brought on based on some simple criteria:
- Operational self-reliance in order to cover the operational expenses of the Village
- Opportunities for employment and meaningful work for residents that are tailored to their abilities
- Creating connections between the Village and the surrounding community
