What Makes The Village Unique? Community.

The Village is founded on the conviction that housing alone will never solve homelessness, but community will. The combination of high-quality, permanent, and deeply affordable housing, and a strong culture of personal growth, support, and social connection is the heart of our model.

Homelessness is the result of a catastrophic loss of family. So the solution must be to build a new family to surround a new home.

Create Culture

Creating a strong culture that lifts and changes all who are part of it, from residents to volunteers, and builds a community with strong social norms. This is what brings out the best in all of us.

Why are we a Village and not a tiny home project?

It is not about tiny homes. You’ll notice that residents live in small homes, yes. But the size of the homes are the least important part of this effort. The key is not the physical structures, but the social system. The primary ingredient for success is creating a strong culture that lifts and changes all who are part of it.

TOSA is an incredible program that I have been fortunate enough to witness and participate in as a speaker. The change they are creating in people’s lives is astonishing and undeniable. That they are now interested in helping Utah’s homeless population with the same amazing program is nothing short of extraordinary. This is a huge gift to all the people of Utah and should be taken advantage of immediately. Those fighting against it are either uninformed as to the efficacy of this program or have some other self-interest at heart. Those, like me, who are aware of what TOSA is actually accomplishing can only guess at the wonders this will do, and the dignity and self-respect this will restore, to such a vulnerable population. We must stand behind TOSA and its leaders in order to help create real, lasting change that will benefit generations and stand as a model for all others to follow. I endorse The Other Side Village wholeheartedly and encourage anyone fighting against this idea to take the time to find out what TOSA really does before moving forward. If you don’t think it’s an incredible idea, you must not really understand what it does.

About The Other Side Academy

The Other Side Academy is a sister program crafted as a training school in which students learn pro-social, vocational, and life skills allowing them to emerge with a healthy life on “the other side.”

This program is available as an alternative to those facing long-term incarceration as well as those seeking a change from the life they’ve chosen in the past. Many of those who seek entrance into the Academy are convicts, substance abusers, or homeless. This school accepts men and women, both pre-and post-sentencing, who are ready to learn a new and better way to live their lives.

How Does The Academy Relate to The Village?

The Other Side Village was founded by the team from The Other Side Academy and it shares the core governing philosophy that people heal and thrive through community and connection. The Village will not operate in the same way as The Academy, however, because it is built for a different population with different needs. The two are separate entities and nothing about how The Other Side Academy operates should be assumed to be true for The Other Side Village.
