Part of The Other Side Village’s mission is to provide affordable, permanent housing to those who have experienced chronic homelessness. We have worked with homeless advocates to define chronic homelessness as any person with a disability who has been living in a place not meant for human habitation for the last 12 months continuously or on multiple occasions that cumulatively total at least 12 months.
We’re taught that shelter is one of the key pillars of survival—but there’s a difference between “shelter” and “home.” The homes in the Village are more than just four walls and a ceiling to keep out the rain. Home is a joyful, safe place that demonstrates progress and ownership.
A home shows independence.
Having your own home means that you have a space that’s truly yours. It means you can fill it with everything that makes you you, like your favorite books, foods, and keepsakes. You can grow plants in your window-sills and hang pictures on your walls. And because you’ve personally taken ownership over your well-being, once you’ve made it your own, you can decide who can share this space with you.
A home brings self-worth.
There’s a strong sense of pride that comes with having a home to call your own. It’s a reminder of who you are and what you’re capable of, not only for yourself but for those that visit you. Every morning that you wake up in your own home is a reminder that you’re on your way to becoming who you want to become.
A home is a sanctuary.
Home doesn’t just protect us from the elements. It’s also a place to find comfort from the daily stresses of life. It’s where we can unwind with a cup of tea and a cuddly pet, or a soft blanket. Even better, we can provide that same comfort for our loved ones when they visit us. Our home can be a safe place for ourselves and the people we care about.
A home requires connection.
Central to everything we do at the Village is the idea that human thriving requires connection. We are, at our essence, social creatures, and we succeed when we are surrounded by people who love and support us and hold us accountable.
A home leads to more success.
Having a home lays the foundation to make other great steps in your life. With a permanent address, you can apply for jobs, universities, and other huge stepping–stones. Your home helps you make that leap towards your next adventure, no matter what that might be.
A home ensures permanence.
There is nothing better than knowing where you’ll lay your head after a weary day. Having a stable home will boost your mental health, especially if you surround yourself with the things that make you happiest. It’s a reminder that you’re in control of your life, and that you’re making decisions that will only improve it in every way.
Your home can be so much more than just shelter. It can be a haven that gives you peace, permanence, and pride. You can fill it with your favorite things and your favorite people. And it provides the stability you need to bring even more excitement and independence into your life.
